Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy and how is it different from other types of therapy?

Psychoanalytic therapy explores the deeper patterns and unconscious processes that shape how you experience life, rather than focusing solely on immediate symptoms or solutions. We look at your history, relationships, and recurring themes to help you understand yourself more fully. This approach tends to be longer-term and more exploratory than other forms of therapy.

How long does therapy typically take?

This varies greatly from person to person. Psychoanalytic therapy is generally medium to long-term work, as meaningful change takes time. Some people benefit within a few months, while for others it may take longer. We'll regularly review how things are going and you're always free to discuss the pace and duration that feels right for you.

What happens in the first session?

After our initial 20-minute phone call, the first session will focus on understanding what brings you to therapy and beginning to explore your concerns. I'll ask about your current situation, your history, and what you're hoping to gain from our work together. There's no pressure to share more than feels comfortable.

Do you offer online sessions and are they as effective as in-person?

Yes, I offer sessions via Zoom, telephone, and in person. Many people find online therapy just as effective as face-to-face sessions. The most important factor is feeling comfortable and able to speak openly, which can happen in any of these formats.

What if I don't know what to talk about in sessions?

This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Sometimes the most important work happens when we explore what it's like to not know what to say. Often what feels most alive or pressing for you in the moment is exactly what we need to explore.

How do I know if we're a good fit to work together?

The relationship between therapist and client is crucial to effective therapy. That's why I offer a free 20-minute introductory call where we can both get a sense of whether we feel comfortable working together. You'll usually know quite quickly if it feels right.

What are your qualifications and are you properly regulated?

I'm a Trainee Psychotherapist (registered member 2011190987) and currently completing my psychoanalytic training under UKCP guidelines. I hold a Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling and have completed training with the Philadelphia Association and Institute of Psychoanalysis. I work with full supervision and adhere to professional ethical standards. You can read more about my background and approach on the About Me page.
